Body Combat is the most exciting way to get fit and feel unleashed. Your fitness will be taken to the next level in ways that you have never imagined.

Body Combat is a truly empowering cardio workout. This fiercely energetic program is inspired by martial arts and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as Karate, Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi and Muay Thai. Supported by driving music and powerful role model instructors, you will strike, punch, kick and kata your way through calories to superior cardio fitness.

Body Combat will improve your cardio fitness by making your cardiovascular system more efficient and stronger. You will expend energy and burn calories. We estimate that each participant will burn an average of 500 calories per class. You will see an improvement in your agility and coordination as well as a balance between your dominant and non-dominant sides, and your right versus left and front versus back. Body Combat improves your muscle speed and power when you are executing kicks and punches correctly. Your movements will become explosive.

The Body Combat program is for Men and Women of different fitness levels and with different fitness goals. You need not have any martial arts experience to participate in the program.

The Body Combat class is for those who want to improve aerobic fitness, achieve weight loss and muscle toning as well as sports conditioning. Participant can self-regulate the intensity of their workouts. Body Combat is an athletic cardiovascular workout with options to suit all ages too.

bjam Classes LesMills         “Move it, Shake it, Reach for it…Dance, Dance, Dance”

The River Valley Club proudly presents the Les Mills Body Jam Program. “Body Jam is the cardio workout where you are free to enjoy the sensation of dance. An addictive fusion of the latest dance styles and hottest new sounds means the emphasis is as much on having fun as breaking a sweat. Body Jam is a 55-minute class with funky instructors who teach you to move with attitude. So grab a friend, get front and center and get high on the feeling of dance.”

Body Jam uses the latest and greatest hip hop, club and rock music with new choreography released every few weeks. The music and dance moves are constantly changing to keep class participants intrigued and challenged.

What does Body Jam do for you?

Body Jam is a compelling cardio fitness workout. It is an athletic fitness program that delivers results quickly through a variety of effective dance-based sequencing of work and rest periods that challenge the cardiovascular system in an energetic, motivating and inspirational way.

Body Jam burns calories. If participants regularly attend 3 Body Jam classes each week and maintain a healthy diet, they will lose body fat. Their weight may not change but their body composition will. They will become leaner.

Body Jam improves coordination and agility. The various dance styles in Body Jam challenge participants to maintain a balance of movements…direction changes, level changes, variations to dance patterns and use of core muscles, arms and legs.

Body Jam improves bone density. Body Jam is an effective way to increase lower limb bone density if the intensity is more than the participants’ normal daily activities.

Cardiovascular training is an important aspect of any fitness regimen. Body Jam attracts different class participants with varied fitness goals and levels and ages as well. Body Jam allows participants to choose the intensity that is appropriate for them. It provides an effective, stimulating, social and fun cross-training workout.

lesmill Classes LesMills         “You Won’t Know if You Don’t Go… PUMP IT!”

Body Pump is an innovative barbell workout that strengthens the entire body. It is a 60-minute program that challenges all of the major muscle groups by using the best weight room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. Great music, awesome instructors and your own choice of weight will get you the results that you came to class for – and fast!

What does Body Pump do for you?

Body Pump burns calories. On average a participant will burn 473 calories per class. Not only will you burn fat, but your resting metabolism will increase.

Body Pump increases lean muscle mass by improving muscle strength and endurance. Improved muscle definition is quickly noticeable and your fitness will improve by doing just 2-3 classes each week for 6-12 weeks.

Body Pump increases bone density. The comprehensive dynamic loads of exercises such as squats, lunges, and the clean&press stimulate the production of new bone, resulting in an increase in bone mass.

Body Pump improves posture. Body Pump develops core strength and stability and offers functional strength gains by using free weights in a wide range of movement.

Resistance training has become an important component of all fitness programs, whether you are looking for cross training, weight loss, muscle toning, rehabilitation, or sports conditioning. Body Pump uses specialized exercise selection, sequencing and intensity within each 60-minute workout.

You will work at your own fitness level to achieve your individual fitness goals. The Body Pump program is for all ages and fitness levels.

LesMills Success Stories

img 0893 150x150 Classes LesMills“BodyJam is a great way to get a workout because it is fun! It’s like a dance party with your friends, but you can get your heart rate up and keep it up for an hour. I personally enjoy BodyJam because it allows me to combine my cardio workout with a dance class. Since I have a limited amount of time for workouts each week, this is a great combination class for me. BodyJam also provides me with a great deal of entertainment value. The BodyJam instructors are great fun, and we laugh our way through our workouts (I think smiling is a good exercise too). It is such an exciting class that when it is over, I wonder how the time flew by so quickly! If you are tired of the treadmill, and you like to get down, you should try BodyJam. The variety of dance types and music will keep you interested and engaged. Your time spent at the gym can be a blast! Come join the fun in BodyJam!” – Sarah Scraffidi

img 0897 150x150 Classes LesMills“Let me begin by saying I love Body Combat!! I know that might sound strange to some people, but it is truly amazing what this class has done for me physically and mentally. After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2004, I would never imagine I would be where I am today and I attribute a lot of that to the whole LesMills program, but specifically Body Combat. Combat has brought down my blood pressure, helped my balance, strengthened my core, and helped me relieve stress. What more can you ask for!! And to have fun at the same time! The instructors are incredible! They bring it every class and push you just enough out of your comfort zone to achieve more. But at the same time, you are able to do it at whatever level you can. So those of us who are not able to do the best side kick in the world still feel like you can do it on some level. Give it a try and you will be back for more!!” – Kristen Simas

img 0892 150x150 Classes LesMills“LesMills Body Pump has made a bigger difference for me in a shorter time than any other exercise program I have tried. My overall health status has drifted up and down over the years. I did some running in college, but got out of the habit. I smoked for about 10 years from college until age 28. At that point, inspired by a photo of a fat guy that turned out to be me, I gave up smoking and started running again. That was about 1980. I was a regular runner and in pretty good shape from then until 1998, when I damaged a knee and had to give up running. So then I started to slide back, gaining weight ever so gradually and getting more and more out of shape. I tried a lot of things to stay in shape, but nothing stuck. Luckily, at around 205 pounds in 2004, I married for the second time and decided I needed to be in better shape. My wife, Laurie, dragged me kicking and whining to the originial BodyPump launch at the RVC. Somehow, I stayed with it. My wife helped a lot. She’s in great shape herself and she’s a good coach. As many have noted, sometimes the hardest thing is to get through the front door of the club. Since then, I have lost about 15 pounds and according to my Body Mass Index, I am no longer overweight. I would still like to lose another 10 pounds or so, and I think I will. I have also lost at least six inches on my waist. More importantly, I feel great! There are a lot of stairs at DHMC where I work. I now avoid all the elevators and take all the steps two at a time. This reinforces the squats and lunges I do during Body Pump class. We seem to live in an elevtor culture, where people don’t even think of taking the stairs. We’d all be better off if stairs were the norm and elevators were saved for when they are really needed. I’m 58 years old, but I feel as good as I did when I was 35 or better. And I keep improving. By the time I am 68, I might be able to do as many push-ups as my wife!” – Carl Pedersen

I am a clinical research scientist at Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Each and every day, I witness the unfortunate consequences of unhealthy lifestyle choices. I believe that an active and healthy lifestyle is the major foundation for every individual’s happiness and longevity. Therefore, the River Valley Club has become a major part of my life. I do not JUST instruct a class at the River Valley Club. It is my passion for health and fitness, along with my determination to help fight debilitating diseases such as cancer and heart disease, among others, that drives me at full speed into the classes at RVC.  It is my goal to ensure the members achieve their health and fitness goals. It is my mission to make sure they come back EVERY DAY. It is my hope to help others change an unhealthy choice, however big or small, each and every day. I am also an amateur NATURAL body builder; I am fascinated by the power we have to transform our mind and body. You have the power, you make the choice, we are here to help.

My first career was as a Registered Nurse and I still work part time in a Rehab Facility, where I’m reminded what can happen when we don’t live an active lifestyle. So try one of my classes and reap the benefits.

005 150x150 Classes LesMillsGRACE WALTHOUR – has been a Les Mills Body Jam instructor at RVC since September 2008 and was hooked on Jam the first time she tried it. This new way of working out was so much fun while being intense at the same time.  Grace has always loved two things: dancing and fitness, and that’s exactly what Jam is all about. As an instructor, she makes you feel at ease and unafraid to just let go and have a good time. Grace’s favorite parts of class are the Latin sections because they have a fantastic fiery feel about them – it makes it so easy to get carried away with the feeling of dance. One really cool way that Grace has applied her Body Jam training is by starting a separate class devoted to people with special needs.  Using some jam choreography and drawing from her background in dance, Grace has put together a program to help these people work on their fitness level in a fun and exciting way as well build up their confidence.
