Senior Programs

The River Valley Club offers Senior memberships and classes specifically designed for seniors. The Club offers numerous Senior classes each week and these are free to members.

Additionally, for people looking for more individualized attention, several members of RVC's staff of personal trainers have extensive experience and formal training and certification in working with seniors at all levels of fitness.

Balance & Mobility Program

The 8-week (sixteen sessions) Balance and Mobility Program will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning April 15th from 1:30–2:30 pm or 2:30-3:30 pm. It is a progressive, well tested and individualized program. The class ratio will be 10/1. Initially all participants will undergo a screening program which will include a Health & Activity Questionnaire, Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale, Berg Balance Scale, Multi-Directional Reach Test, and Senior Fitness Test. These tests will assist in determining strengths and weakness elements so correct exercises can be implemented.

We will work on Center-of-Gravity Control, Multi-Sensory Training, Postural Strategy Training, Gait Pattern Enhancement and Variation Training, Strength Training and Flexibility Training. This will be done in a logical progressive sequence. Each class will begin with a ten minute warm-up then move on to the above skill activities addressing your balance needs ending with stretching and cool down activities.. All activities and exercises will be performed with your safety as a first concern.

Understanding Balance

Balance can be defined as the process by which we control the bodies center of mass relative to the base of support whether it is stationary or moving. While many of us take our balance for granted when it becomes an issue it can cause a dramatic impact in our daily living.

Why Older Adults Fall

Maintaining a high level of balance and mobility is essential to aging successfully. As we progressively lose body strength, bone density and muscle mass, as our vision and hearing deteriorate our sense of balance is affected. If you have any of the below health related issues you should consider our Balance and Mobility Training Program.

Postural Disorders
Stroke or Cardiovascular Disease
Parkinson’s Disease
Multiple Sclerosis
Arthritis
Vestibular Problems
Vision Disorders
Osteoporosis
