Our steadily growing aquatics department at RVC has required us to make a few changes to the class descriptions, levels and times of our group swim program. Our classes now enable children to start swimming at just 1 years of age and continue swimming with us through the transition into competitive swim training. Each group class is small enough so each child receives individual attention and instruction. Please note, you do not have to be a member of the RVC participate in our program.
Our new session begins Tuesday, January 19th. Group swim lessons run for 6 weeks at a time, twice a week on both Tuesday and Thursday (12 sessions total).
Group swim levels are as follows:
Watertot —for toddlers ages 1-3 years, this is an introduction to basic water skills, safety and fun. Care giver must be in the water with child during class.
Beginner A (3:30-4:00pm)—for children between 3 and 6 years of age that have no experience in the water and are very timid learners.
Beginner B (4:00-4:30pm)—for children between the ages of 4-6 that have some experience and are comfortable putting their face in the water.
Advanced Beginner (4:30-5:00pm)—for the swimmer that is comfortable moving a minimum of 10 yards independently with the front and back crawl strokes.
Intermediate/Stroke Development (5:00-5:45pm)—for the swimmer that is looking to develop their strokes and/or looking to transition into competitive swim training. This class is 40 minutes and is held in the lap pool.
Rates are $85.00 members and $95.00 non-members for all 30 minute class sessions 6 weeks in length and 12 sessions. Intermediate is a 45-minute class and therefore $97.00 members and $107.00 for non-members.

GMA Swim Team Strength Trains at RVC
Written By: Laurie Albert

The Sports Performance Center at RVC has been just the thing to add focused, effective dryland training to our swimmers’ regimens.” said GMA Head Coach, Laurie Albert. “Our philosophy is to develop the whole student-athlete and dryland training is an integral part of that effort.”
At the beginning of this season, we took a good hard look at what was going right with our program and what needed some attention. Quickly we realized that our dryland training needed emphasis, so on the recommendation of RVC’s head trainer, Jen Poljacik, Jon Cioffi was chosen as the GMA dryland training coach. With his background in sports team training, and athletic training certifications he skillfully crafted training routines, specific to core work and the demands of swimming, all while expertly including athletic emphasis on each move. Our swimmers work with Jon two times per week, they love his guidance, his humor, and the extra challenge of his routines. At a recent swim meet, our swimmers achieved many best times, with significant drops in time. We are so pleased with the results thus far.
During a recruiting visit to the River Valley Club, Head Coach of Auburn University, Brett Hawke commented that the Sports Performance Center had “everything you need” and that the work being done by our swimmers with Jon Cioffi was “spot on.”
Additionally, GMA is beginning to take advantage of the climbing wall as a way to add more fun and athletic activities to our program. Climbing is something we looked at adding to the program after a recommendation by one of the college coaches who came to the RVC while recruiting team member, Patrick Murphy. Head Coach of the University of Texas, Eddie Reese, encouraged us to make use of the climbing wall, especially for our younger swimmers because the strength and movement involved with climbing is complementary to swimming.”

She has been teaching swimming to children and adults of all talent levels for the past seven years and was the head coach of the Quechee Club Swim Team for four consecutive summers in the Southern Vermont Swim League. DONNA SCHLOSSER, AEA – My background is consistent with my love for teaching. I am the eldest of 12 children and I have raised 4 children of my own, including twins. In the early 1970’s I started my own business, a Day Care based in my home, which is still going strong today! All these years of teaching have taught me how to creatively deal with almost any situation. But at the end of a long day, I was craving a way to relax, have fun, and include exercise too. When the River Valley Club opened its doors I joined quickly and soon found that Aqua Aerobics was a fantastic way to exercise and unwind in the evening. I had always secretly wanted to become an aerobics instructor, so in 2005 I completed the requirements to become certified to teach Aqua Aerobics through the American Exercise Association. I love to teach and often use my creative background to find new routines that are effective, and most of all, FUN!! I hope you’ll join me – I teach three times per week at 5:30pm! Meet me in the pool!

She has also been a PSIA certified ski instructor since 1997 and in November 2008 became a Les Mills certified Body Pump instructor. Maryam strives to ensure that every student in her class – regardless of age, experience, or condition – feels comfortable and is able to improve at their own pace. When she is not busy chasing after her three kids, Maryam also enjoys teaching Persian Cuisine and challenging herself by competing in triathlons.
